Mom’s legs have grown weaker and her balance worse.  She still is not sleeping at night and roams the house doing God knows what.  One morning dad awoke to find her on the floor of the living room.  She had fallen some time during the night and was unable to get herself up.  She may have been there for hours, we aren’t sure and mom couldn’t tell us.  Dad hadn’t heard her calling for him and felt awful.  At that point dad and I decided it was time to get the little magic button.  That day I contacted Lifeline.

Within a few days the unit had arrived and mom was set up and ready to go.  That very night around 11:00 p.m. my phone rang and it was Lifeline calling.  “Mrs. G, your mother has fallen and can’t get up.  We tried calling your father, but cannot reach him.”  “I’m on my way,” I responded.  I jumped out of bed and began throwing clothes on when my voice of reason, my hubby, suggested that I call my parents house phone before rushing over there.  Dad answered.

“Dad, Lifeline just called.  Mom has fallen and she can’t get up.  They couldn’t reach you.”

Sounding confused dad answered, “I don’t think so.  I’m in the living room watching TV and your mom has already gone to bed.  Hold on, let me check.”  I heard dad walking to the back of the house and then asking mom if she had pushed the button.  “Yes,” mom replied as she lay in bed holding on to the Lifeline necklace.  “Why?” dad asked.  “Because I fell and I couldn’t get up,”  she replied.  Dad sounded a bit shaken, but assured me that mom was alright.  A short time later my phone rang again.  It was dad.

“I don’t think this is gonna work.  I don’t think she really fell because I know she can’t get herself up.”

“Dad, let’s give it some time.  It’s something new for mom and it may just take some getting used to.  Good thing they don’t charge by the call!”  I responded at which time we both started giggling like to two small children.  At least dad can still see the humor in things.  Sometimes ya just gotta laugh!
